The volunteer event

Rafael signs up to volunteer at a Saturday food collection event organized by the community center. The event will collect canned food, rice, and hygiene supplies for local families. A week before the event, the coordinator sends all volunteers an email with three teams: welcoming donors, sorting supplies, and recording donations. Rafael chooses the sorting team because he likes organizing materials, but he has never worked at an event like this before.

On Saturday morning, the coordinator explains the process. Each donation must be checked for damaged packages and separated into labeled boxes. Food goes in one area, hygiene supplies in another, and baby items in a third. The coordinator also explains that volunteers should ask before moving a full box because the storage room can become crowded. Rafael listens carefully, but when the first donors arrive, several people bring mixed bags with different types of supplies.

Rafael notices that the sorting table is getting crowded. Instead of trying to solve everything alone, he asks the coordinator whether one volunteer can label boxes while another checks packages. The coordinator likes the suggestion and assigns Rafael’s teammate, Chloe, to label the boxes. Rafael checks the packages and places them on the correct table. By noon, their team has sorted more than one hundred bags without blocking the walkway.

At the end of the event, the coordinator asks volunteers to complete a short follow-up form. Rafael writes that clearer signs near the entrance could help donors separate items before reaching the table. He also thanks Chloe for communicating quickly when a box was full. The coordinator says they will use the feedback for the next event. Rafael leaves tired but satisfied because he contributed to the community and learned that good instructions become more useful when people ask questions and improve the process together.
