The delayed train

Irene is traveling across the city for an appointment at a government office. The appointment cannot be completed online, and she has waited three weeks for the available time. She leaves home early and plans to take one train directly to the office. At the first station, an announcement says that her line is delayed because of a signal problem. The screen does not show an exact restart time, and several passengers are already looking for other routes.

Irene opens the transit app and compares two alternatives. One route uses a bus and then a train transfer; it takes forty-five minutes if traffic is normal. Another route uses two buses but has fewer walking distances. Her appointment is in seventy minutes, so both could work, but the first option has only a ten-minute margin. Irene asks a station employee whether the bus route is affected by the same problem. The employee says the buses are running normally but recommends leaving immediately because traffic becomes heavy near downtown.

Irene chooses the two-bus route because it has more time built into the trip. She calls the office and says, “My train line is delayed, but I am using another route and expect to arrive close to my appointment time.” The receptionist notes the message and says that a fifteen-minute delay can be accommodated. Irene saves the bus stop number, checks where she must transfer, and keeps the office address visible on her phone.

The first bus is crowded, but it arrives on time. At the transfer stop, Irene follows the signs instead of guessing, then reaches the second bus with five minutes to spare. She arrives at the office seven minutes before her appointment. Later, she checks the transit alert and sees that her original train line did not restart until an hour later. Irene is glad she did not wait without information. The experience shows that an alternative is useful only when it is compared against time, reliability, and the importance of the commitment.
