La historia
The tenants in Lina’s apartment building receive a note from the building manager. The laundry room will be closed for three days because one washing machine is leaking water onto the floor. The manager invites residents to a short meeting on Tuesday evening to explain the repair plan. Lina goes because she uses the laundry room every Wednesday and wants to know whether the problem will affect the whole building.
At the meeting, the manager says that a maintenance company can repair the machine on Thursday. However, the company needs access to the laundry room from 9:00 to 3:00, and the floor must stay dry before the work begins. One resident suggests placing a sign on the door. Another says the building should send a text message because some people do not check the notice board. Lina points out that several parents need clean clothes for school during the closure.
The group discusses two options. The first is to keep the room closed until Friday, which is safer but inconvenient. The second is to let residents use the two working machines on the other side of the room in the evening, after the repair workers leave. The manager explains that this option requires someone to check the floor and lock the broken machine. Lina volunteers to help on Thursday evening, and another resident offers to translate the message for neighbors who prefer Spanish.
By the end of the meeting, the group agrees on a plan: the manager will send a text message that night, the room will close during work hours, and the two working machines will open from 5:00 to 9:00. The manager thanks the residents for offering practical ideas instead of only complaining. On Thursday, the repair is completed and the floor stays dry. Lina feels that the meeting was useful because everyone understood the problem, considered different needs, and shared responsibility for the solution.
