La historia

On Monday morning, Marina receives a new schedule from the manager of the hotel where she works. The schedule changes her regular shifts for the next two weeks because the hotel will host a large conference. Usually, Marina works from 8:00 to 4:00 at the front desk. This week, she is scheduled from 11:00 to 7:00 on Wednesday and Thursday. At first, she is worried because she also has an English class on Thursday evening and needs to plan transportation carefully.

During the staff meeting, the manager explains the priorities. Guests from the conference will begin arriving at noon, so the team must prepare keys, welcome packets, and information about local restaurants. Marina’s new shift overlaps with the busiest check-in period. The manager asks everyone to read the schedule, write down questions, and confirm that they understand their responsibilities. Marina notices that her colleague Ben is scheduled to train a new employee at the same time that he must help with arrivals.

After the meeting, Marina speaks with Ben. She says, “I can prepare the welcome packets before noon if you can show the new employee the computer system.” Ben agrees, but they decide to ask the manager first. The manager approves their plan because it keeps the front desk covered during the busiest hour. Marina writes a short list: prepare packets at 11:00, help guests at noon, and finish the daily report before 7:00. She sends herself a reminder so she will not forget the change.

On Thursday, the plan works well. Marina arrives ten minutes early and finds the packets ready to organize. When the first guests arrive, Ben and the new employee are available at the desk while Marina answers questions about the conference rooms. At the end of the shift, the manager thanks the team for communicating early. Marina takes the bus directly to her English class and arrives on time. She realizes that reading a schedule is not enough; asking questions and confirming priorities can prevent problems before they begin.
